The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources on Monday asked 125 municipal wastewater treatment systems, including Milwaukee’s, to begin investigating for the presence of a group of chemical contaminants that pose health hazards to humans.
Separately, the initiative follows a proposal by the Gov. Tony Evers administration in June that would set strict standards for safe levels of PFAS in groundwater.
A trade group, the Wisconsin Water Quality Coalition, has raised questions about the pending regulations and potential financial impacts of what it views as “extremely restrictive” standards.
“We will continue to advocate for regulation based on science that properly balances our health impacts with protecting the future of Wisconsin’s economy,” the group said in a statement last month.
